This month's Arts Marketer in Residence is Sarah Pressler from the Round House Theatre. Sarah's e-mail marketing strategy has evolved over time as she's come to realize that she can send out MORE e-mails to her audience as long as she makes them relevant and interesting. In her conversation with Christina Blodgett, Sarah talks about the personalized newsletters that come directly from Round House's Producing Artistic Director, as well as the new marketing plan that has greatly increased group sales

The Virtual Front Row: Using E-marketing to Capture and Develop New Audiences
by Christina Blodgett with Sarah Pressler

Antonin Artaud, the French playwright, actor, and director, said that the theatre, "for all its artifices, depicts life in a sense more truly than history, because the medium has a kindred movement to that of real life." That feeling of watching a play surrounded by an audience equally inspired by the work is something that can't be fully be replicated outside of the theatre. The challenge for arts marketers in a culture dominated by television and cinema is how to encourage patrons to continue to seek out the theatre for an experience of active exchange. Sarah Pressler has answered this challenge by using e-mail as a tool to develop new audiences and bring the theatre to life for Round House Theatre's patrons.

    This Month's Poll

In last month's poll, we asked: "
Within your organization, which department is primarily responsible for managing your Web site?"

We were pleased to note that 56 percent of responders said it's the Marketing department that manages their site! 20 percent said "none of the above" — maybe an outside hosting company handles those? — and only 5 percent of responders said that the IT department manages the site.

    This month's question:
What would you like to see more of in future issues of this newsletter?

    Banishing the Myth: Part 284
A new study from JupiterResearch and Ipsos Insight seems to indicate that people over 55 actually spend more time online than younger people! (But multi-tasking isn't taken into consideration, so maybe the report is a bit suspect.)

    Senior-itis
Here's another perspective on the online-seniors question, with a chart showing the leading online activities of senior Internet users in the U.S.

    Senior Web Users Continually Surprise
And one more data point about seniors online: adults over 55 said that promotional e-mails are more influential than either customer reviews or search engine results when it comes to making online purchases.
